Back to Life Physical Therapy provides a wide variety of therapeutic treatments, but we specialize in two: Functional Dry Needling and the Graston Technique.

Functional Dry Needling

Dry Needling is a general term for a therapeutic treatment procedure that involves multiple advances of a filament needle into the muscle in the area of the body that is producing pain. These muscles typically contain a ‘Trigger Point’—or as you might know it, a “knot.”

Dry needling is an effective treatment with very few side effects for acute and chronic pain, rehabilitation from injury, and even pain and injury prevention. This technique is unequaled in finding and eliminating neuromuscular dysfunction that leads to pain and functional deficits.

This isn’t an injection—there is no injectable solution, and we use a very thin needle. Most patients will not even feel the needle penetrate the skin, but once it has and is advanced into the muscle, the feeling of discomfort can vary drastically from patient to patient.

  • A healthy muscle feels very little discomfort.
  • A tight or knotted muscle will feel a twitch response much like a muscle cramp. You may, at first, experience similar symptoms to those you’re treating—don’t worry, it will go away soon.

Typically, you’ll see positive results within 2-4 treatment sessions; however, this can vary depending on the cause and duration of your symptoms and overall health.
